Recycled Denim Quilt

April 22, 2020 By Mary Peterson 23 Comments

Question? What does a refashionista do during a quarantine when she has a boatload of donated blue jeans in her stash? Answer: Make a quarantine quilt of course!

What you see here is the finished product of denim, blood, sweat, and tears. And I do mean that literally! There were times I cried out, “What have I gotten myself into?” But in the end, it was worth all of the work.

I should have kept count, but between the quilt and the rug I think there might be about 40 of recycled jeans and two printed denim jackets represented in this picture.
The pillows made from scraps also with the addition of some denim friendly
twill tape from my stash
.

Before

This was my room before the makeover. You can’t see it, but the brown fabric is faded and the stripe side of the fabric was full of pills. It was overdue for a change!

Tutorial

The plan was to completely cover the old quilt. Functionally the old quilt was still good, but it was faded and worn. I must confess I did treat myself to new sheets. The reason for this was that I wanted to skip the dust ruffle so I purchased 2 new sets of sheets. This gave me 8 pillow cases and allowed me to use one fitted sheet to cover the box spring and one flat sheet for the back of the quilt. (Don’t worry recyclers! The old sheets will be put to good use.)

I harvested all of the strips from the jeans by getting the long strips from the front legs and the shorter strips from the back legs. I decided on a 3 1/2 cut width so the finished width was 3″ allowing for a 1/4″ seam.

Here are two jackets that were just perfect for the printed portion of my quilt. The strips from these pieces were much smaller so I used a lot less of them.

I layed out the basic raw pieces to make a plan but honestly I planned the quilt in sections as I went along. I couldn’t explain how my brain worked through this if I tried but at the end of all the harvesting, cutting, overlocking, and topstitching I ended up with …
This!
Here is a closer view.
The fun part was over and now comes the blood, sweat and tears…
I had to hand sew the old quilt to the back of the denim with carpet thread. After that I put right sides together and sewed on the backing leaving the bottom open to close later.
Sewing the backing on a queen size quilt was clumsy, awkward, and I worked up quite a sweat. Also turning that baby over right side out was like wrestling an alligator. I poked myself with pins millions of times in the process.

In conclusion, I have never worked harder on a sewing project in my life!
The rug beside the bed was made many months ago on another post if you are interested.

I finished it 5 days ago and I am still sore and exhausted.! What do you all think?????

Have you ever made a quilt? Would you do it again? Once is enough for me but I am glad I can say that I did it well.

Stay safe everyone but talk to me…

Happy Refashioning,

Mary, Thrifty Chic

Very pretty! I love the way you combine fabrics. I have a stash of denim, too… Is it heavy now? With all that extra denim? For my personal use, because of the weight, I might have made it as a duvet cover and not sewn the actual comforter in. I’d like to leave my options open. Then we could put a lightweight duvet in for summer.

      Hello RW!

Yes, It is heavy now but it will simply be a covering for the bedding. I am purchasing a separate blanket
I am just learning now about duvet covers. I was honestly clueless about them. I have never been good with decorating and home furnishings. My expertise has always been in clothing. In my life I always felt lucky if I had one nice bedspread much less interchangeable covers. I learned from you today!

    I love it Mary!

I serged 6” denim patches together to make a picnic cloth. I still haven’t put on a backing but have used the quilt a few times. One of these days…

      Hi Delilah,

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! No chance of me passing it on though, except to my children. That thing is staying with me for life! HaHa!

You didn’t quilt it…. why didn’t you just turn it into a removable duvet cover? Button on to comforter at the bottom ! Would have saved a lot blood sweat and tears.

I love it! The printed jackets really add a lot of wow factor!

You are a genius! But that would mean I would have to look at that yucky old quilt when I have it cleaned. HAHA! Oh well, next time. I learned so much from doing this and now I learned something from you too. Thanks!

Your quilt looks great and certainly kept you busy! I like the fact that you repurposed so many pairs of jeans and I am away to check out the link to your rug. Well done. 👏

It’s beautiful and durable and makes a wonderful update to the room. You shouldn’t give up on quilting though. Just stick to using light cotton fabric instead or chambray if you want the denim look without the weight.

      Hi Maria,
Thanks for your feedback. After a rest from this one I will take you up on that. I just found a long forgotten stash of flannel squares in my closet from my years in the fashion industry. (fabric vendor samples) I feel a flannel quilt coming along in the fall!

Your quilt is spectacular! Since I am a quilter, along with liking refashioning, I can appreciate all the work you did on your quilt. It must have taken great patience and strength to make it, and it turned out beautifully. Looking forward to your next post!

Thank you so much! Yes it was hard work and the day after it was finished I was exhausted, but I am happy with the result.

Hey Sarah, I had collected and save old jeans for a few years. Ask your friends to donate to you instead of the thrift shop. It does take a lot of pairs to do this. So glad I was able to inspire!
