Basic Sweatshirt Re-imagined!

August 3, 2015 By Mary Peterson 24 Comments

Hi Everyone!

Have you ever wanted to “Do Something” with a basic sweatshirt? I have, because sweatshirts do nothing but make one look like a prison inmate! I wanted a sweatshirt with some shape and fashion.

Then I saw this sweatshirt version on Pinterest and the ideas started to come! So, I set out to see if I could recreate it!

Inspiration Picture:

My Result:

Here is my result!!!! In the future I will never be seen in the prison variety. You can be fashionable even with a basic sweatshirt!

Back

Tutorial:

Here is what I started out with. It cost me a whopping $1.99. Definitely what one would call “Prison Chic.”

Step 1) I took the basic sweatshirt and turned it inside out. I marked my design lines using pins

I cut the yoke halfway and then doubled it over to cut the other side. I did the same thing with the front and back panels.

Step 2) I sewed the front and back panels to the yoke

Step 3) I created the side panels and cut them from the remaining fabric. I apologize that I lost the pics for this portion. Maybe I took them maybe I didn’t???

Step 4) After putting in the side panels I cut down the width of the sleeves. I tried to make a drop shoulder like the picture but couldn’t stand the bulk in the arm. I decided to make them a regular set in sleeve which took quite a few fittings.

.

I used the first sleeve as a template for the other

Step 5) I used the rib from the bottom of the original seatshirt as a facing for the side panels. Then I gace this area a 3 1/2″ double topstitch. The front and back panels got a 1″ double top stitched hem.

I am ready to rock with this one. Let me know what you think!!!!!

There you have it! Can’t wait to hear what you think!

Sweatshirt With a Twist Refashion

October 5, 2014 By Mary Peterson 26 Comments

Hello Everyone!

Now it is really time to meet my “Sweatshirt with a Twist” refashion! Really! LOL!

After:

IMG_2319 - Version 3

The Twist? A panel of damask in the front, no bottom rib, and no terrycloth! But, I still consider it a sweatshirt. At least it still feels as comfy as a sweatshirt.

.

The inspiration was this little article about “Luxe Sweatshirts.” I love a sweatshirt just like everyone else, and why not make it “LUXE?”

Once I found this piece of damask fabric for $1 and the unused man’s shirt below, I knew I had a match.

Here you can see a close-up of the fabric from the man’s shirt. It is a beautifully weighted 1×1 knit.

TUTORIAL:

I used a pre-existing raglan pattern so this will be quick, but there is an amazing trick in here for you to keep up your sleeve. Don’t miss it!

.

IMG_2113

.

Step 1) First I cut off the sleeves and used the back of the sweater to cut out the back panel. The cut off sleeves accommodated my raglan sleeve pattern perfectly with just a few snips to make them a little smaller.

IMG_2117

Step 2) I sewed the sleeves on the body and the damask panel is on the front. Here you see it all put together minus the neckline. The only part I had to hem was the front damask panel. I used the existing hem for the back.

.

.

Step 3) Here is the big tip. The bottom hems are perfectly sized to use for neckline ribbing. Here I cut off the bottom hem of the front sweater and used it for the neckline ribbing. I will admit I had to put it on twice because it didn’t lie flat the first time.:)

.

.

Here you can see me sewing the rib around the neck.

Finished!

My husband may think that I am “wearing a couch,” but what does he know?
I like it. How about you?

Let me know 🙂

Love ya,

Mary
