Shabby Chic Denim Jacket

August 26, 2023 By Mary Peterson 2 Comments

Hello Everyone!

This time I decided to let the machine do the embroidery. Take a look!

AFTER–My latest jacket

As you know, I am an avid thrift shopper and I started to sell some of my finds to create a little extra income. Shipping was/is easy and I didn’t want to mess around with returns. Happily, I found out that I could sell my upcycles on this platform and I was ready to give it a try! This was my summer project/experiment and I am hoping for a good reaction. Take a look in my “closet” and you will find some of my original jackets and other goodies that I have curated over the summer.

The prices on my jackets are firm and cover the cost of the jacket, materials, and labor for the upcycling. There is a modest markup to make a profit to continue the work. Keep in mind, Poshmark takes a cut from the profit and shipping is extra at a standard flat rate of $7.97. Also, please know that all sales are final so make sure to message me through Poshmark to get any measurements that you may need and ask any questions before you buy. Sorry but I cannot ship internationally.

I can’t wait to see what you all think. Talk to me!

Patched and Embroidered Jeans

June 19, 2023 By Mary Peterson 10 Comments

Hello Everyone!

I’m Baaack! I know it has been a long time, and I am so excited that I have my upcycling groove back! Currently, the upcycling world is focused on the buzz of, these patched and ragged jeans as inspiration. Their retail version sells for about $600. Yikes! I love them, but I would never pay THAT much!

I started with a thrifted pair of jeans for $14.99. While making mine, I concentrated on making them less ragged and oversized, and I am very happy with how they turned out. The reaction from my co-workers and the public at large has been quite positive.

My Version

Below is a picture of the full front and back. Following are close-ups of the details.

Front
Back
Bits of antique linens and doilies among embroidered cabbage rose print. Zig-zag and embroidery stitches keep everything in place

More fun bits of applique
Antique linens and pieces of fabric

I had the best time making these. Dare I say I am ready to make more for gifting and/or selling??? Stay tuned for more to come. Please give me your feedback as I love and depend on it. Do you think you are ready to try this? Let me know!!

Embroidered Jeans

December 15, 2017 By Mary Peterson 5 Comments

Hi Everyone!

.

Recently I visited the website of my refashion friend, the queen of refashion.
Beth Huntington. She showed me how to get the embroidered jeans I longed for without the hefty price tag. It was easy and even a novice could do it. Thank you Beth! Here is my version of your wonderful idea.

Check out my results below, and check out Beth’s video here:

Refashioned Again!

September 30, 2017 By Mary Peterson 21 Comments

Hi Everyone!

.

Many many years ago when I started this little blog I was just getting the feel of how I wanted to represent myself and my hobby. Does anyone remember this early number?

Take off the collar from here.

Add it here!

.

Here was the end result.  Quite tame, but it worked for a while.  I got quite a bit of use out of it this way, but it still felt like a bit of a snooze fest….  Luckily,  I never threw away the scraps from the original jacket because a few weeks ago inspiration came after I discovered the embroidery feature of my sewing machine.  This jacket could be a work of art!!!  Here is what I did:

.

First I added machine embroidery down each side of the placket and along the bottom band edges.  I used the heavy denim thread that I normally sew to the hem my jeans.

.

Then I added another panel to the back and topstitched alongside it as well.  The entire piece now looks so much more complete and expensive.  So many people ask me about it when I wear it around town. ( No one ever said anything about the first version.)  Now I have a piece that completely shows my “Design Esthetic.”  As they say on Fashion Runway.

.

.

Here is the new front and back on yours truly.  This piece has new life.  I have already had the jacket for 20 + years. Here’s to 20 more!

As always your comments are appreciated and welcomed.  I hope you are easing into the fall weather.  Until next time…

Happy Refashioning

Love ya!

Sweatshirt With a Twist Refashion

October 5, 2014 By Mary Peterson 26 Comments

Hello Everyone!

Now it is really time to meet my “Sweatshirt with a Twist” refashion! Really! LOL!

After:

The Twist? A panel of damask in the front, no bottom rib, and no terrycloth! But, I still consider it a sweatshirt. At least it still feels as comfy as a sweatshirt.

.

The inspiration was this little article about “Luxe Sweatshirts.” I love a sweatshirt just like everyone else, and why not make it “LUXE?”

Once I found this piece of damask fabric for $1 and the unused man’s shirt below, I knew I had a match.

Here you can see a close-up of the fabric from the man’s shirt. It is a beautifully weighted 1×1 knit.

TUTORIAL:

I used a pre-existing raglan pattern so this will be quick, but there is an amazing trick in here for you to keep up your sleeve. Don’t miss it!

.

IMG_2113

.

Step 1) First I cut off the sleeves and used the back of the sweater to cut out the back panel. The cut off sleeves accommodated my raglan sleeve pattern perfectly with just a few snips to make them a little smaller.

IMG_2117

Step 2) I sewed the sleeves on the body and the damask panel is on the front. Here you see it all put together minus the neckline. The only part I had to hem was the front damask panel. I used the existing hem for the back.

.

.

Step 3) Here is the big tip. The bottom hems are perfectly sized to use for neckline ribbing. Here I cut off the bottom hem of the front sweater and used it for the neckline ribbing. I will admit I had to put it on twice because it didn’t lie flat the first time.:)

.

.

Here you can see me sewing the rib around the neck.

Finished!

.

My husband may think that I am “wearing a couch,” but what does he know?
I like it. How about you?

Let me know 🙂

Love ya,

Mary
