Tropical Trends

March 23, 2014 By Mary Peterson 10 Comments

Hi Everyone!

.

This has been a very busy couple of weeks. My day job and daily life have been keeping me away from my sewing machine :(, but my refashion mind never stops working :). I have been researching the trends, and tropical prints are a big on the fashion plan for Spring and Summer.

.

Just look at all of these beaufiful styles I have been finding on Pinterest:

.

I did however have a few moments to scout out topical offerings at the local thrift shop and was pleasantly surprised by what I could find, particularly in the men’s Hawaiian shirt realm.

.

Here is a shot of some (I have lots more than pictured) of the things I picked up over the last 2 weeks. The best part is that it all cost me under $20 thanks to ST Patrick’s day special of 75% off of green tags. Patience people, Spring Break is coming soon and I will have my first offering shortly!

’til then…

Love Ya,

Mary

The red and gray blouse looks like something to wear right now. What will you do to it?

      Hi Mother Deer!

Yes! This one will just need a little fix. It had an elastic waist that was taken out. I just need to fix it. I thought it was so cute!

Hi Joanne! Thanks for being patient. It is so difficult to find balance these days. Don’t you think? So many ideas, so little time, can’t quit my day job. LOL!

      Hi Karen!
So good to hear from you as always. Yes! I had the luck of the Irish last week. Thank you for being patient. Trying to do it all and do it all gracefully has been trying! LOL! Sometimes I just gotta give myself a break!

Hi Mary, One day prior to your fun post about this year’s tropical fashion fun I had just finished a tropical refashion. I was inspired by Prada’s runway styles combining tropical with dark colors. (I have links to my shirt photo and the Prada versions but I don’t think it works here) One fashion columnist called it “tropical noir”, another “tropical goth”. Anyway, I bought a beautiful rayon Hawaiian print shirt for $2.50 and a black tee for 50 cents. I cut off the sleeves of the print and narrowed the body to fit better. I cut long sleeves out of the front and back of the tee, envisioning a way to be “tropical” even in cooler weather. Notice the left sleeve-I was going to put that swirly lettering on the inside, but then decided it looked sort of cool, almost like a tattoo, plus the color complemented the tropical print well. To tie the oddball theme colors together, I made a pocket from the tee and made an odd shaped appliqué from the pattern for the right sleeve. Fun! (sorry, don’t know how to show photos)
