Chiffon and Silk Refashion

November 11, 2014 By Mary Peterson 26 Comments

Hello Everyone!

.

Here is my latest AFTER without glasses so you can see my refashioned lashes, as well as this great blouse/tunic I refashioned over the weekend.

I have been wanting to jump on this trend for a while now, and finally the perfect pieces presented themselves to me in the thrift shop. Below you see the two inspiration photos that got me thinking. I wanted to put these two ideas together in a way that works for my life. I love the chiffon see through pieces that have been appearing on different styles over the last few months and I believe I have married these 2 ideas in a perfect combination for me.

Here are the two thrift shop pieces that made it happen. The first is a beautiful, lightweight, raw silk blouse. It was way too big, and I had already chopped off parts of the sleeves for another project

The second piece was a very ugly chiffon dress (bought strictly for the chiffon) with a printed branch across the waist YUCK!

.

Here comes the tutorial:

.

Step 1) First I cut off the sleeves and took out the 90’s shoulder pads.

IMG_2529

.

Step 2) I put the blouse on the form and fit my basic tunic/blouse pattern on the front.

IMG_2532

.

Step 3) Put the front down and cut. Put the fronts together and cut the other side to match.

IMG_2531

.

Step 4) Do the same process with the pattern on the backside of the blouse.

IMG_2533

.

Step 5) Sew the side seams leaving room at the bottom for possible slits in the side. At this time I was not too sure how long I wanted it to be.

IMG_2545

.

Step 6) Cut out sleeves from chiffon dress. Now I remember why I hated chiffon in design school. It is a very unstable wobbly fabric.

IMG_2537

.

Step 7) Cut a band the desired with for the sleeves and stitch it to the bottom of the sleeve.

IMG_2534IMG_2539

.

Step 8) Turn the cuff, press, pin and edgestitch the sleeve band

IMG_2541

Step 9) Overlock the sleeve together and stitch on the sleeve cap to ease into the armhole.

IMG_2544

Pin and baste the sleeves into place.

IMG_2551

Step 10) I determined the length of my hem and finished it with a 5/8″ topstitch with 3 !/2″ side slits.

Let me know what you think!!!!

I love it and feel I am ready for any holiday parties that come my way!

‘Til Later

Love Ya!

Mary, looks very chic and quite versitile too for many partying occasions. I had to laugh at the comment on chiffon, I feel the same about it – but silk is always good! Thinking some touches of color could make it very festive as well.

You are right Kathleen! Some color can give it more versatility.

Great refashion, love how you reworked these two pieces. You always seem to see a new garment within a old.

That is what I am here to do Denise. I could never afford to buy all of the stuff I make on my blog. I wish I had started this years ago!

Really nice workmanship, especially on the difficult sleeve fabric. Another winner, Mary 🙂

Love this one! I agree chiffon is a pain, but if you use the stitching paper it goes easier. I just did a casual version of this with a sweatshirt that turned out fun.

Hi Judy, You know I have never heard of stitching paper.
I will have to look into this! I would love to see your sweatshirt.

It’s genius! I love the blend of the fabrics and the idea of pinning the pattern to the blouse while it’s on the dressform! Had never thought of that, but so glad you did.

Hi Georgie, my sewing is so much better now that I have my
dress form. I love it! Fitting and pattern making are so much easier.

thankyou. I have always struggled with getting my pattern on a piece of clothing to repurpose. Duh. Never thought to put it on my dressmaker dummy. You are a genius. I love your remodel. You came out gorgeous.

Thank you Debbie! Getting my dressmaker dummy transformed my sewing. I recommend a professional one because it is more stable and has lines of demarcation for the CF, CB, side, and shoulder seams! Have a great day!

I just discovered your blog and have enjoyed viewing your creations. I love that you redesign, recut, and reimagine your clothing…not just a tuck and trim but a new use for cast-off clothing. Can’t wait to search through all of your pages

Thank you so much Anna, I love to make new out of the old. I do my fair share of the “tuck and trim” thing but my favorite is when I can totally re-imagine something. SO Glad you are here!!!!
