Hi Everyone!
.
My 21 year old son came to me last week and said, “Mom, I have an idea to refashion my favorite t-shirt on the back of a jean jacket.” He has been on winter break from college and just like that, he caught the refashion bug! He has been watching me do it for years and wanted to save that t-shirt. As you will see, he even asked me if he could try sewing it! I think it turned out really great and we had fun making it together.
Here is my handsome kid wearing the before. We tried to find a jean jacket in the thrift stores but they are quite hard to come by. He purchased this jacket at Target for $50 and the quality was excellent.

This t-shirt had been well worn and loved. It was getting kind of “beat up” but the screen print was still in great shape. It was worn into a vintage feel that was perfect to go with the washed denim jacket.

.
Here is his first try at the sewing machine. We had to cut down the edges of the screen print a bit on the top and bottom to fit on the back of the jacket. He is sewing the black knit fabric around the edges to create a frame for the picture. It was quite hard to pin the shirt on the back without distorting the picture or the jacket but we finally wrestled it into submission and I carefully stitched it onto the back of the jacket with the sewing machine.

.
Here is a close look at the new version. He loves it, his friends love it and he looks fashionably cool if I must say so…but I am partial:)

Yeah! for him. Came out superb!
Thank you Linda. We were both excited about it!
How cool!!! He did an incredible job! And you are right, he is a handsome young man.
Hello Melody!
Thank you so much! I think so too but I am biased haha!
Love it. You have every right to be proud!
Awww thanks Vickie!!!
Looks great!
Thank you so much Pam!
That looks great! One of a kind that’ll surely be envied by friends.
Hi Laura,
Yes, he has had many comments from his friends. It really did turn into a lovely piece than he can wear for years.
He looks just like you! I love to see your refashions & menswear is definitely the way to go!
Thank you Maria. Yes it will be nice to interject some menswear. I do many more pieces for myself that I do not post because they are redundant and I refused to post something that I have done before or would never really wear. Menswear is a way to show some new ideas.
I love the look and what a great idea to save a favourite T shirt that is best before.
I love the “after”!! And I love seeing a young man sew as much as I love seeing them cook 😉 My 20-something son cooks..hmm maybe if I show him this post, he will want to sew!
Right? He has all kinds of ideas now. He even posted it on his instagram. I love that he had no qualms about a man sewing.
It turned out great! And it’s wonderful that he wanted to do this with his mom! It’s harder to connect with our kids when they grow older.
Agreed Julie. He has all kinds of ideas now. I am finding he needs to be creative in all kinds of ways. This is good for him and we enjoyed working together.
Amazing!! Great job Tyler
Thanks Lillian,
We had so much fun doing it. He is very impatient to do more. I have created a refashion “Diva” but I love it. He says I must let him do more next time…haha
Wow! He did a great job, love the look.
Thank you Denise! We had fun and he is already “Directing” our next project.
He looks just like you! And the jacket is ingenius.
Perfect!
He gets his looks from you that’s for sure. The jacket is very cool, the image is a really interesting one. I have done this using heat and bond lite it makes adhering the image much easier.
Thank you Connie for the comments and the tip. I will have to try that next time. I am typically scared of those type of things in case I make a mistake but I understand the formulas are much better than the ones I used to use “Back in the day.” Perhaps you can tell me what brand you have been successful with?
Mary, warms the heart when children and grandchildren take an interest in the things we love!! I gave my 8 year old granddaughter a sewing machine for Christmas. We spent a few weeks learning the basics. Machine is now in her care as I am off to Florida
Kudos to your son!! Great design ❤️
Hello Christine! What a great legacy! Your granddaughter will always remember the time she spent with you doing that. I have such fond memories of my mother and I working on projects too.
Isn’t it wonderful when kids get the bug? I love when men take up this art. They have such different concepts of things. I can’t wait to see more of his work.
Hi Pat,
Me too. He is already telling me what he wants to do. Stay tuned! 🙂
I love it! How awesome to pass down the love of refashion. I have a suggestion for next time you do something similar that is fiddly to pin down. Buy some “505” basting spray from a quilting store. It will allow you to spray baste the fabrics together, then washes out completely. It’s made for basting the quilt “sandwich” together before machine quilting.
Thank you for the tip Judy. I will have to try this next time. I am typically afraid of those type of things because years ago they didn’t work so well. I guess I have to get
with the times as I am sure formulas are improved.
It turned out wonderfully! Your son is creative like you and that’s great! Looking forward to seeing some more of his ideas in the future.
It must be in the genes!
It’s hard to believe it’s a first effort.
Love it.
Do you guys watch Project Runway?
Good luck with future creative endeavours.
Your idea is wow!so impressed, Beautiful workmanship.
Thanks so much Susan! My son and I had a great time making it!
