I finally had a minute to get a picture taken. The dress turned out great, but like I said, “Now I need a place to wear it!”

.

Things are finally settling in to a new shade of normal around here. I just love my new digs!
Here are a few pictures to share:

Erdem Copycat Refashion!

January 20, 2014 By Mary Peterson 16 Comments

Hi Everyone!

.

Finally, my room is set up to work and I have been able to finish the Erdem copycat I promised you. I will not have time to take pictures modeling it until the end of the week though. Even after three weeks I still continue to play catch-up! Moving is a terribly taxing process and I am so glad we are seeing the finish line.

.

Just to refresh your memory, here is the Erdem original:

.

Here is my version:

How did I do it? I couldn’t believe my luck when I found this reptile print silk basic dress at Goodwill for $7.99. In addition, I have been holding onto this lace for years. To be honest over 20 years. It was the same lace that I used for my wedding dress! The only other thing I added was a metal zipper on the back! Here it is, step by step:

.

2014-01-19 08.01.16

1) Add 2 strips of lace in the center front matching on both sides. This was a lot harder than it looks. I had to do it 2 or 3 times before it lay down correctly. Even then, I was dismayed to see that the original dress was not cut symmetrically using the print. Even the neckline was slightly lower on one side. Nothing is more frustrating but I worked with it. Grrrr!

.

.

2) I took a perfectly good hidden zipper and tore it out. The back had to be a metal zipper sewn on the top just like the original, otherwise the lace on the front does not make sense.

.

.

3) I also took up the hem 1 inch and scaled the body down from a size 10 to a size 8.

.

Did I hit it? I just need a place to wear it!!! Someone has to get married, baptized whatever! Remember I will wear it later this week.

‘Til Later.

Love Ya!

Black and White Simple Tunic

January 8, 2014 By Mary Peterson 20 Comments

Hi Everyone,

.

I know I promised you Erdem, but that will have to wait one more week. I am still in the throes of moving and my studio is a wreck! But wait!!!I already had this refashion ready but forgot about it!

.

IMG_2222

It all started with this 3x beauty which appeared to have never been worn. It was a nice piece from “The Black and White Market,” and I am sure the original owner paid a handsome sum for it. As for me, I paid $5.99 for all of that beautiful print!

.

It was only a simple resizing job but I think I can pass along some valuable tips on how to downsize these plus size treasures. You can see I have paired the tunic with leggings and ballet flats. This is totally comfortable, chic, and work appropriate for me. Sorry for the blurry picture, but I had a hard time stopping long enough to get it taken. This was my first day back to work after the holiday.

.

Here is my tutorial and tips:

.

1) (not pictured) Remove the sleeves

.

2) When resizing a plus size top, the armhole and neckline are both going to be too big. Here you can see how to solve both problems at once by taking off width at the shoulder seam.

.

.

3) The next step was to take in the desired amount from the side seams.

.

4) I slimmed down the sleeves to fit the new armhole and put it all back together.

I am really happy with this piece. Everyone just loves the striking print! What treasures have you found lately? I’d love to hear from you!

’til Later…

Love Ya,

Mary

Happy New Year and Sneak Peek for 2014

December 30, 2013 By Mary Peterson 2 Comments

Hi Everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful holiday season. My household is totally turned upside down. Grandpa has moved to assisted living and we are happily downsizing. A plus for “Thrifty Chic” is I will get my little studio out of the front living room and back into a room of its own!!! Moving is an awful process, but it is a chance to simplify, and re-evaluate what is really important in your life. As taxing as the process is/has been, I am excited about a fresh start!

.

We are moving this week so I will not be posting again for at least another week or so. Please bear with me.Here is a teaser of my next post after I am moved in.

.

I will be making my version of this dress by Erdem:

.

I think you will be amazed by what I come up with for this one!

.

I hope you all have a wonderful, safe and happy New Year! Thank you all for your loyal following and support this year. I have big plans for 2014. Stay with me!!!

.

Love ya!

Instant Dress Refashion

Hi Everyone!

Meet my latest makeover.  This one took me all of 20 seconds!!!  I don’t know about you, but I absolutely despise self fabric tie backs. 🙁  I am not 8 years old anymore, they never look good from the back, and when you sit in a chair they make you feel like you have a tumor on your back!  Manufacturers should save the fabric and labor costs and streamline their designs.  Get rid of them! That is what I did.  Snip, snip and this refashion was done.  This dress was a Goodwill find @$7.99.  It had a great print and appeared to be unused.
I paired it with this handmade beaded necklace made with an Australian opal. I don’t do much beading anymore, but little did I know when I made this one it would be perfect for this dress.

What do you think everyone? Do you hate ties as much as I do? If so, unite and free yourself. Declare your independence from them! Just snip, snip, and you are ready to go!
‘Til next time
Love Ya,
Mary
