Blouse with Stitched Collar

March 28, 2020 By Mary Peterson 16 Comments

Hello Everyone!

I hope this post finds you all well and healthy. To be honest, I feel a bit frivolous posting right now, but I think it is helpful and therapeutic to keep busy and creative during these stressful times. Below you can see the end result of one of my latest projects. It is not an extreme overhaul, but the small changes I made created a huge difference! Keep scrolling to see the details.

AFTER

This finished blouse now has some added features that take it from just so-so to noticeable! Keep scrolling to see how it started and how I changed it.

BEFORE

The blouse had a a beautiful floral print with chambray accents but was limp and lifeless.
I started by adding a blue pinstripe trim to the collar edge salvaged from another blouse in my stash.
Once I machine stitched the trim I began to do the boro style stitching.
The stripe fabric continues all of the way under the collar to give the collar much more structure and style than it had before.
This is the finished collar.
I used the same technique on the button side of the placket and added the pinstripe trim next to the buttons and the underside of the placket.
I also changed the placket to the pinstripe fabric. I was so glad I did not donate the pinstripe blouse that gave up it’s life to fix this floral beauty!
I also added the trim to the cuff edge. I am still debating on adding boro style stitching to the cuffs. What do you think?
Done! and looking not so “Ordinary” if I say so myself!!!
I can’t wait to hear what you think! Let me know if you think adding matching boro style stitching on the cuffs would be too much. I value your opinions.

I hope everyone is well and remaining safe. Happy refashioning and good health to all!

Much love,

Mary, Thrifty Chic

Mary you really breathed some new life into the blah top! It looks crisp and stylish with the addition of the great blue fabric and stitching. I say if you think the extra stitching will be fun go for it. Love the color of the blouse it is so nice and springlike.

As for posting fun things right now………..yes please we all need some distractions right now so keep posting fun stuff. I posted on my blog for the first time in a year yesterday and want to do lots more posting. Mostly I post quilts but have been into making clothes and such again lately so I will post both. My blog is enchantingquilts.blogspot.com if you want to see some of my stuff. I do plan to post several times a week.

Awww! Thanks Dawn!!!! I miss you too. It is so strange to have all of this time to create. I have always wanted more time but not like this. Everything is so surreal right now.

Really freshened the blouse up! Looks great! One question – you had to remake all the buttonholes, right?

      Hi Susan,

Thank you so much for the feedback. I did not have to make new buttonholes because I had saved the placket from the stripe blouse!!! I did have to respace the buttons though because the original placket had a slightly different spacing.

Love your alterations. The buttonband brightens up your shirt beautifully.👏

Not frivolous at all! I’m absolutely fine being at “quarantined”! But I do miss my quilting/sewing group, seeing and discussing all their ongoing creative projects!!!

    Thank you!!!!

Go for the stitching! A little or lot!!! What ever suites you!

      Hello Etta,

Thank you for your comments. I am happy to see that folks are wanting this kind of distraction from the insanity. I will keep the projects coming.

Wow! What a refresh! Sewing is what’s keeping me sane here at n Florida, where we’re staying home and bracing for the worst. Please keep sharing!

Everyone I know is grateful for – not distraction right now, but a focus on the things we appreciate.

      Hello RW,

Thanks for your feedback. It took a lot for me to get busy because sometimes anxiety bottles up my creativity, but I am finally getting to the point that sewing is soothing again.

I think the boro stitching would be great on cuffs, etc. It is not an “in-your-face” feature but is subtle enough to be elegant.

    Love this makeover.

Hello Pat! So good to hear from you. I think I will go back and do “some” “stitching. Not the entire cuff but just a few rows over the trim. Stay healthy and safe!!!
